Volunteering At CARE
Would you like to be a volunteer?
If you have a desire to share yourself, your experiences, and your skills with others who really appreciate you, Escapees CARE would like to offer you the opportunity of joining the volunteer teams at the Escapees CARE Center in Livingston, TX.
There are two ways to volunteer. One is as a Day Volunteer. If you cannot volunteer for a month or more, but will be staying at the Rainbow's End RV Park, come over and volunteer for a few hours. We have a number of jobs that you can do at your leisure.
The other way to volunteer at Escapees CARE is as a Resident Volunteer. You volunteer for a minimum of one month. CARE provides a 50 amp site with full hook-ups and three (3) meals per day, seven days a week (some volunteers rate it as a $500 to $700 value). While you pay your own electric and propane the real VALUE past volunteers say, “It is the experience of helping make many lives brighter. Plus lifelong friendships have been formed with our seniors, staff and other volunteers”. As a resident volunteer you will work a weekly schedule. Depending on the number of volunteer teams scheduled, you may work 28-36 hours per week, plus you may or may not get a phone call during your one night “on-call” shift.
Many of the volunteers return yearly (or more frequently when they are able) for which Escapees CARE is very grateful. This is a testament to how much they enjoy their time here.
Every year CARE certifies 80 to 100 volunteers as having provided over 100 hours of volunteer services at Escapees CARE to the President's Volunteer Service Awards recognition program. Qualifying recipients receive:
* An official President's Volunteer Service Award lapel pin with.
* A personalized certificate of achievement, and
* A congratulatory letter from the President of the United States.
Volunteer jobs include:
Volunteers work a rotating schedule. The typical jobs consist of: morning, afternoon or evening shifts. You may be in the kitchen, driving resident to appointments, opening and closing the CARE Center building, monitoring the phone at night (this doesn’t mean staying up all night), and some light cleaning. The kitchen shifts typically last 3 – 4 hours. Driving assignments generally are local and require only an hour or two. There are, however, exceptions which is to be expected. After all, we are here to help our residents.
Volunteers work as teams. For couples this allows both team members to be off at the same time. In the case of singles, we pair two singles to form a team. They are then treated as any other team.
How much time off do you have?
We try to achieve five teams each month. Many Escapees prefer volunteering in the winter months; PLEASE consider the summer months. From July through September, we offer a cash stipend to offset the electric costs of air conditioning. With a 5-team schedule, we try to provide each team with two days off (not consecutive). These off-days rotate with the schedule as do the jobs. If we have fewer than 5 teams then each team has 1 day off per week. We understand that some would prefer to work 3 or 4 eight-hour days and then have the rest of the week off. Most, however, prefer the shorter daily hours. The schedule we use presently was developed by volunteers and has worked quite well for the last 3 years.
